Eagle Tribune Published Cuts Jobs
The Eagle Tribune Publishing Company says that eliminating 52 full- and part-time jobs will not affect the quality of the editorial content of its nine publications in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
Publisher Al Getler said only one full-time and three part-time jobs were eliminated from the Editorial department.
The company also publishes the Derry News of Derry, New Hampshire, which will switch from twice weekly to weekly publication. This, according to Getler, will allow the Derry News to be part of the "green movement."
The publishing industry is the latest market to show damage from the troubled American economy, as the just-released annual survey by Publishers Weekly found diminishing raises and job insecurity at its highest level in five years.
The survey found that the average raise for the publishing industry in 2007 was 4.2%, the smallest increase in more than five years, and that bonuses for those in management were half of what they were in 2006.
Liberal books, particularly those critical of President Bush, have been a successful market for the past five years, and a new online club is hoping to develop this market into a movement, even after the president has left office.
''The Progressive Book Club, which officially launched [on June 16th], combines the offerings of a traditional book club with the interactive features of an online social network and the ideals of a grass-roots political party,'' according to the Associated Press.
Middle American Job Market Slumps in Spite of Rise in Exports; EmploymentCrossing Seeks to Restore Job Market Equilibrium
Pasadena, CA — Intermittent job losses continued across the Midwest in August against flat business reports, according to a nine-state business survey released by Creighton University. Though the survey indicated a rise in exports, output, and sales, Ernie Goss, the professor who led the study, said that ''the inflation gauge is still telegraphing excessive inflation in the pipeline.'' The report further indicated that more and more employers are getting their work done with fewer employees, putting the Midwest region's job market under further strain. EmploymentCrossing, the leading job board in the US, seeks to find more and more jobs in Mid-America and already boasts of an overall job count of more than 112,000 jobs in the US.
