Profile

Workman Publishing seeks a creative, forward-thinking, collaborative art director to run the calendar/stationery design department. This is a rare opportunity to be part of a dynamic team of publishers, editors, photographers, writers and designers, who are focused on constantly creating new calendars while keeping our customers’ favorites fresh. The ideal candidate will possess a keen design eye and merchandising instinct, the ability to organize and motivate a group, excellent communication skills, and a love of paper.

Responsibilities include:

• Head a talented team of designers, delegating tasks and guiding designs

• Work closely with the calendar publisher, editorial director, editors, designers, production department, photographers, and photo researchers to create exciting new calendars, while keeping older calendars fresh

• Select and hire artists

• Run art meetings at which calendar covers and interiors are discussed

• Work closely with production editors to keep schedules on track

• Work closely with the pageaday.com digital team to ensure design excellence

• Oversee production of merchandise shots suitable for catalog, online, and social media

Qualifications:

• Strong interest in paper products

• Stellar design portfolio

• Strong interest in the calendar and stationery marketplace

• Ability to think three-dimensionally and generate ideas for new titles and formats

• Experience with branding

• Self-sufficiency, organizational skills, attention to detail, and entrepreneurial spirit

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Ability to multi-task and work under pressure

• Mastery of Adobe CC, especially Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; photography skills a plus

• 10 years design experience; experience with calendars is not necessary

Workman is a medium-sized independent publisher of award-winning books and calendars. Our West Village office is high-energy and creative.
