A Manhattan-based literary agency is looking for a full-time Foreign Rights Coordinator to liaise between our office and our co-agents based in the US and abroad.
This job provides a bird’s eye view of all the moving parts that go into selling books in foreign markets, from domestic retainer to finished translation copies. Daily tasks involve providing material (manuscripts/proofs/author photos/author bios/contractual details) to our co-agents and ensuring that foreign deals run smoothly. Organization is key as you will be maintaining up-to-date files of material for all agency titles (both front list and back list) for which we retain foreign rights. You will spend a lot of time corresponding between organizations, so ease on the phone and good verbal and written communication skills are important.
You will be responding to queries about the status of rights availability and current agreements, and liaising with co-agents and our Accounting department regarding questions about manuscript delivery, contract status, payment status, deal memos etc. As the only in-house foreign rights employee, you will be fielding many enquiries, both internally and externally. Like most publishing roles, this job requires attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
Prior foreign rights experience is not required but is strongly preferred.
Applicants must be self-motivated and confident working independently. Due to the broad range of colleagues (both in-house and at co-agencies) the successful applicant will be interacting with, this role requires someone who is self-assured and has good interpersonal skills. Proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn our proprietary systems are essential.
