Overview
We are currently seeking an Editor in New York City to solicit, recommend, acquire and develop authors across a variety of genres, including but not limited to women’s fiction, book club fiction, psychological/domestic thriller and historical fiction for MIRA Books.
Responsibilities
Solicits book submissions from agents; identifies commercially viable projects within the imprint’s editorial mandate; and negotiates deal points and contract terms.
Works closely with authors on editorial development, as well as liaises between the author and other departments such as Sales and Marketing. Helps formulate and implement author growth plans.
Fosters current agent contacts and develops relationships with new agents.
Writes catalog and flap copy, and other copy as needed.
Acts as an imprint advocate both internally and externally, including attendance at writers’ conferences and other networking events that create further inroads and cultivate relationships.
Actively engages in the full publishing life cycle, including participation in key packaging, marketing, publicity and sales processes.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years’ experience as an acquisitions editor in commercial fiction
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
A strong eye for bestselling fiction and demonstrated ability in recognizing new talent with strong commercial potential.
A broad network of agent contacts, with specific emphasis on those in the realm of commercial fiction
Knowledge of industry trends and solid competitive insight
Contract negotiation skills, along with knowledge/understanding of standard publishing contracts and P&Ls
Strong writing and communication skills and excellent editorial skills
Creativity, flexibility and initiative
