Publishing Director, Black Dog & Leventhal (New York)The Publishing Director of Black Dog and Leventhal will develop the publishing vision of BDL with the Running Press Publisher and will represent this vision to agents, authors, and packagers. This person must provide leadership to the BDL editorial team, guiding the acquisitions process and overseeing and analyzing P&Ls and budgets. While personally responsible for acquiring projects from agents and packagers, this person also must create and maintain a creative culture at BDL and strive to develop books and book product in house with the BDL team. This person will also work with sales on shaping publishing programs for different channels and accounts. This position reports to the VP and Publisher of Running Press. Essential duties and responsibilitiesDevelop overall product strategy for BDL list, including channel and account-specific content development and growth in ancillary product.Develop IP strategy with BDL team, including originating book ideas and series in-house.Develop international strategy with publisher and grow international business.Oversee BDL editorial staff, which is run by BDL editorial directorManage day-to-day operations and imprint P&LAcquire projects from agents and packagersSeek out publishing programs with outside partnersLiaise with marketing, publicity, art and production to ensure timely schedules and coordinated pub plans for BDL booksRepresent BDL in the publishing industry and at tradeshows and industry events with editorial director Knowledge, skills and abilities requiredMinimum of 10 years of book acquiring and editing experienceDemonstrated expertise in illustrated book publishingSolid knowledge of book publishing processes and functions – Editorial, Managing Editorial, Production, Design, & Copyediting, and how they interface.Strong contacts in the publishing industry.Deep knowledge of product mix at different accounts.Experience in P&L process and financial management of book projects.Some experience supervising staff in the book publishing field is preferredStrong communication skills (verbal and written) with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings to a variety of audiencesResults-driven, and goal-focused; an ability to take ownership of a variety of projects and make timely decisions.Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrated ability to follow up and follow through on multiple tasks and manage time effectively.Drives change and innovation by improving work product or process, and challenges established norms where appropriate.
