Production Editor Jobs
A production editor schedules and manages the entire production process, which includes preparing the manuscript for typesetting, finding a printer, and hiring and supervising workers, including the copyeditor. A production editor edits, proofreads, and formats text like technical business writing as well as complex tables and charts related to sophisticated business topics as needed for use in a variety of outlets. A production editor ensures that issues are compiled in accordance with agreed upon schedules and standards, preparing all relevant documentation, additional material, etc. as necessary. A production editor prepares cover material, updating all necessary fields as required, including instructions for contributors, pricing and copyright information, etc. A production editor ensures that all copyright assignment forms and exclusive license forms are received before article/issue publication, liaising with editorial offices where possible. A production editor liaises with editorial offices to ensure efficient manuscript transfer in accordance with agreed upon company procedures, especially where an electronic editorial office is involved. A production editor works closely with the director, editor, and program coordinator as well as administrators, faculty, and outside vendors to complete projects on deadline and ensure accountability on details.
A production editor job requires a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent plus a minimum of four years of related experience in publishing, business writing, or another related communications field. A production editor should have superior editorial and interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and be an expert in paying attention to detail. A production editor must have experience working with MS Office products, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and experience with graphical presentations of data.
