An executive editor works with editors and designers on the development of the editorial calendar and sets and enforces deadlines for copy. An executive editor conducts negotiations with writers and agents, issues and records contracts with writers and agents, and ensures that timely payments are made to the contributors. An executive editor maintains liaisons between the author, associate editor, and copy editor; compares editorial changes to the author's changes; and keeps the author up to date on schedules, revisions, and related matters. An executive editor directs and coordinates the work of consulting editors and reports their comments to the copy editors. An executive editor prepares operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. An executive editor recommends various personnel actions relating to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
An executive editor position requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two to four years experience in a relevant field. An executive editor should have outstanding communication, analytical, and organizational skills. An executive editor must demonstrate a creative mindset, enthusiasm for online media, and an understanding of business leaders’ issues and information needs.
