Those who have talent in writing, marketing or even designing can look for careers in the publishing field. Though, getting a job in publishing may require lot of effort and education, but it is always fulfilling for those who have the passion for such a job. Publishing has generally been considered a more demanding career path and you may have to be patient especially during the early phases of the career. You may not get desired rewards instantly and may have to put in more hard work than required in other jobs. But those who are interested putting their ideas and information in front of the world and want to show their talent will not really be worried about it.

The publishing field demands multiple kinds of jobs that include writers and columnists for writing articles, news and other content. It also includes field experts or idealists who can write on specific subjects especially for magazines and journals focusing on particular domains, marketers for preparing innovative, interesting advertisements, marketing campaigns and designing the material, grammarians, proofreaders or language experts for editing, correction and proofreading jobs. It also needs designers and typesetters for designing the publishing material. These are the basic jobs in the publishing world which may be overlooked and handled by editors and other senior members of the publishing house. These senior professionals are involved in decision making, planning content and managing the publishing process. Of course the professionals in the basic jobs have the chance of being promoted to these senior jobs by proving their credentials and performing well in their tasks. Therefore, the publishing industry provides opportunities for various talents that come together to present information in an attention seeking way.

As mentioned, publishing invites people with different talents, therefore educational requirements are also multiple. People from different educational streams can look forward to serving the publishing world. In fact there is no formal requirement to get a job in publishing. However, a bachelor's degree can obviously be of help. The bachelor's degree can be obtained in any language, arts, journalism, design etc. These are just some of the favored fields. But there is actually no limit to the type of educational qualification that can be suited for publishing. Even science graduates may find jobs in publishing especially with products such as magazines focusing on science topics. You may even get a Masters Degree in Journalism or Linguistics to build your credibility. A good way to start working and gain experience in this field is to work as a freelancer.

The major skill requirement may be that of fluency in language and a flair for writing. This is specific for the writing and editing tasks. However, proficiency in other skills such as designing, art, graphics and computer skills are also desired which can help you lead different roles in a publishing house.

You can join professional training institutes for getting trained on specific or multiple kinds of publishing jobs. Many educational and training institutes provide advanced and targeted courses for publishing jobs.

There are plenty of freelancing jobs in publishing. As you gain experience working as a freelancer and gain confidence that you have the capability to continue, you may start looking for full time jobs in publishing houses, newspapers, magazines, book publishing companies, website publishing companies or SEM companies. If you are specifically targeting online publishing, you may also need to acquire computer skills.

The salaries, as mentioned, may not be as competitive as other professional fields especially during the initial phases of the career but will definitely improve and reach satisfactory levels as one moves up the value chain. Especially online publishing has been seeing lot of financial focus, so you can wish for good financial rewards in this field as well.

Publishing is a distinct career path for people of specific interests and those who want to avoid any conventional jobs and career paths. Publishing is a career path generally picked by people out of choice rather than as an easy option.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
